Where do you live? If you live in NY, go to your area BBB (better business bureau) and your local DA (district attorney). If it was over the net, go to the Federal Trade Commission (http://www.ftc.gov) and file a complaint. That'll scare the crap out of 'em.
Sounds like you need to get your $ back. All of it. They owe you EVERY PENNY of what you have paid for the car; sounds like they are pulling a big fat fast one. You would be right to call them on it. What they are doing is called FRAUD, and people go to jail for a long long time for perpetrating such BS.
Good choice in car overall, bad choice in dealership. $4500 for an 89 turbo convertible is a helluva deal; dealers will not sell a car at that pirce unless they know up front that something is very wrong with the car. You'd be spending a good deal of $ up front on the tranny work you mentioned.
Find a Saab through this web site. I sell a few myself once in a while; contact me if you are interested (click on my name above). No convertibles at the moment, though.
