To be VERY general (others will be more specific) I've found the early 900's to be very reliable. I've had 2 79 900 3 doors, and engine wise they were very bullet proof. They were derived from 99's, so forget a usable AC, but other than that I couldn't get them to stop running. I did have a lot of trouble with body rot (in MD where there isn't THAT much salt on the roads in the winter). Finally retired the last one due to the rust.
The 79's had 4 speed transmissions, and there were never any issues with them.
