CV boot replacement-tools not listed> Posted by DougM [Email] (#211) [Profile/Gallery] (more from DougM) on Fri, 4 Jan 2002 16:19:32 In Reply to: Replacing outer CV boot and hissing sound...., Gary C., Fri, 4 Jan 2002 15:19:03 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The procedure is>
1.Remove 4 ball joint bolts.
2.remove outer tie rod.
3.unload suspension with spacers under upper A-arm.(should be step one)
4.remove caliper and hang from spring.
5.loosen inner boots' hose clamp and stick finger between boot and driver to break the seal.
6.pull whole assembly from car and take to bench.
7.remove c-clip from inner tri-pod joint and remove joint and boot.(be careful the big rollers don't come off or you'll have nightmares and see lots of needle bearings on the floor. use a rubber band to hold the three rollers together) you might have to tap it off-use brass and don't hit the rollers.
8.remove outer boot and clean what grease you can from the joint.(brake clean and rags work OK for this)
9.there is another clip that has to be spread to remove the drive shaft from the outer joint. Once the joint is clean enough you should be able to see the clip. remove driveshaft.
10. I usually disassemble the joint all the way down by removing the balls and cages. It's tricky, but it can be done with practice and patience. Look for any scoring or pitting, especially on the cages where the balls ride. If any damage you might need to replace the joint. If the joint makes a clicking noise when you make turns slowly, you probably need a joint. If you caught the ripped boot soon enough you might get away with just cleaning and regreasing and new boot)
11.grease joint by squirting grease through the drive shaft hole and stick your finger to push the grease into the joint. put the driveshaft back in and make sure the clip locks it in place.
12.put some grease in the boot(put most into the joint) and install new boot and clamps.(make sure the driveshaft is clean before sliding boot down the shaft or dirt will get in the clean joint)
13.put on inner boot and inner joint and clamp boot to driveshaft. put c-clip back on and grease the tri-pod joint and driver(part of tranny)
14.stick assembly back into the car and tighten everything back up.
Not a fun job, but I don't mind doing it too much. Greasy and messy and rewarding in the end. Good luck.
