I have run into this before. In my experience the stud broke below the surface of the head. I have a kit that I purchased from Snap-ON. It consists of a drill guide, drill bits, and removers. The removers are splined shafts. I have removed broken studs with this kit without removing the head. The manifold should be removed. Besides Snap-ON the same kit can be bought through Mac and Matco tools.
