Usually they work pretty good. First you take the nut off the taper pin. Then place the tool so that the bolt end which is indented fits against the threaded end of the pin. The slotted portion will be around the other end of the pin. Tighten the bolt and the pin comes out. It works well but don't expect to re-use the taper pin. Sometimes you can but usually the threads become damaged.
