The white lites aft of the cornering lamps are supposed to illuminate when the car is in reverse - this is a feature listed in the original "engineering features" sales brochures that SAAB issued when our cars were new. It's to help you see objects before you turn your car into them!
The "button" on the reverse switch wears down over time. Remember that it is engaged at least once per use of your car, i.e. when you park it and pull out the key. The original switch button on mine was made of aluminium (soft) and is in an area that catches a lot of abrasive debris - not a good combination. I had the same problem of the revers lamps working only when the stick was pushed over to the right, but a new switch (installed without a spacing washer) cured the problem. It was easy to install and inexpensive from one of the site sponsors.
