Scotty,
If I remember correctly from my old 87, that is/was an amp for the factory radio, and is definitely NOT needed if you put an aftermarket head unit in. Just buy a wiring harness adapter (Crutchfield has one for your car) to hook up your new head unit. If you want to have the ability to play tapes while your son is in the car, I would advise buying a new cd player that also has an auxilary input jack on the front of the cd player. It looks like a headphone jack on a walkman, and you just plug in a tape player so you can also listen to tapes through the cd player.. muuuuch cheaper than buying a tape player head unit and a cd changer. Anyways, that would give you the best of both worlds.
Good luck!
