Sounds like a grounding problem on the back of the gauge itself if it changes when you tap the dash or push on the instrument cluster. You can tighten this ground nut by removing the driver's side speaker grill on the dashboard. You'll have to either do it by feel or have a helper guide your hand in the speaker hole. The nut is directly at the base of the needle on the gas gauge, and simply needs to be tightened. I can't remember off the top of my head, but the nut is somewhere in the 6-8mm range, I THINK.. :o) Anyways, good luck!
