Color change is not simply a function of contaminants. Clearly blowby gases, soot/carbon particles, etc. contribute to the color changes. Notice that oil becomes dark much faster in older vs. newer engines (due to more contaminants). There are other factors including base stock and company specific additive. (Some oils are darker to begin...)
For the synthetic advocates: Change in chemical structure can also change the color of the oil. Heat regular oil to a high temperature and then synthetic (I think Mobil did that in a commercial a few years ago...). The dino will become darker due to the chemical change taking place in the oil molecules. Synthetic are much more stable at high (extreme) temps. This is why synthetics have a role in turbos. Turbo bearings can become be very hot due to the high speeds (200,000 rpm) and hot exhaust gases.
For the average driven, N/A engine... save your money and use dino, changing every 3K - 5K depending on your driving habits. I've used Dino in my N/A 2.1L 1991 S. At 194,000, the engine (only repair: headgasket at 155K) still runs like new.
