I have an 86 900 8V base & have been working on it to get it in better shape. I've been driving it about a 1 1/2 Years.
I just took a 200 Mile Road trip With the wife & 2 Kids.
The week before I Replaced the intire Exaust System With the newer style Strait though Starla Replacement from Sobstory. The old Cat was slightly pluged I replaced it with one from a parts car I had.
WOW its Like a different Car It now pulls most Hills on the Interstate in 5th Gear. Before I had to shift to 4th on any Hill & it seemed to work pretty hard to cruse the Interstate. I also had to turn the Idle down about 300 rpm after replacement.
So yes It cruses Just Great! A turbo is comming my way soon though.
