Shawn,
I feel your pain. In my previous '84 900S (now my parts car for current '84 900S), I had this same problem. At first it was a very faint chirping, then all of a sudden--had gone in KMart and it was fine, came out, fired it up, AND--SCREEEECH!!!

I didn't have a good manual or know about Townsend Imports, or about the Townsend Imports' website (a great resource) at the time, so I decided to wait and take it to the SAAB dealer when I could spare the money. I had to wait several months...

So that I could use my ventilation system with what little air moves through the car at highway speed, I simply pulled the fuse for the fan motor. This allowed the vent system to work--sort of. It was better than nothing, but without fan-forced air, you get very little heat/cooling.

Anyway, you can do this job yourself IF you're willing to take off the steering wheel, dash fascia, and dash. It's pretty involved, but there are good instructions--I haven't attempted this myself, though--on the Townsend website, linked below.

Good luck!

(By the way, the dealer I took mine to ruined the wiring for my glovebox light--snipped it in two!--which made me so mad I never let them work on my 900 again. They quit selling SAABs a year or two ago, hee hee hee!)
