Hello all, Good to be with you again.
I just finished a 9 month, 15,000 mile odyssey throughout the US and Western Canada and my car was a real champ. Finally, we started getting the high idle, nearly 2000rpm. I cleaned the AIC (it wasn't that dirty). I found a couple vacuum leaks and replaced the hoses. I checked the AMM and the filament appeared to be intact (It had three sides of a square-I can't tell from Bentley if it should have 4). I tried that little rev test in Bentley and I never did see the filament glow. I am hesistant to think it was the problem because the idle was always steady--at various altitudes (10K to sea level). At that point, The idle was still not under control. I cleaned the throttle plate and even adjusted the throttle position switch all the way back and that didn't help much. Lastly, I loosened the throttle screw about 2 and a half turns (seems quite a bit to me). That did the trick with the TPS tilted all the way back as far as it could go. Now the intermittent problem is that the throttle plate seems to stick--sometimes giving me a 3000rpm idle! The solution is to pop the hood and physically turn the throttle mechanism so that it is in contact with the throttle screw. It sometimes seems to be stuck open about a 1/8 of an inch. I also tightened the nut on the throttle lever so that there would be more tension on the spring but that helped only a little. I thought I cleaned the throttle plate pretty well so I don't think that's making it stick--maybe something in the hinges? It takes a little force to close it.
Anyway, I got the idle to a very smooth 850 (as long as the throttle isn't stuck open). No check engine lights before or after. If it's ok, I guess I could leave it but it doesn't seem right that I have no more adjustment in the TPS. None in the throttle crew either because the spring loaded part doesn't really turn any further. Am I just overcompensating for some broken part of the system? Boost seems no worse, it is steady, fuel economy is fine. Will emissions be affected? Is it possible I've missed a vacuum leak anyway?
Well, any input would be greatly appreciated. And if you haven't been to Graceland you are missing out. I saw a lot of cool things but that was easily the highlight of my trip!
Elvis has left the building.
