I believe it's the chain sprocket sizes that can change the overall gear ratio. SOmeone on here had a chart that tells you which sprockets you have based on part number of the transmission. I've heard of people swapping the two sprockets out with some from a non turbo or 4 speed to get higher gearing. As far as a rebuild, you can get it apart and back together no problem. The problem is setting the shims for backlash on the differential gear. That and you need some bearing pullers/slide hammer and a press to change out the bearings.
