I'm always in favor of saving the car because its more that just basic transportation. You know where its been and what's been replaced. Can you see yourself using it as transportation 3 years from now, 5 years, X years. Presumably, you'd be looking for the same car which is just as old as yours, but, where has it been?
For now, the POR or Zerorust will do. Having a bodyshop weld in a piece of metal is not the most complicated or expensive thing you'll ever do to a car; I'd check that first. For rust-through, you can use a fiberglass and resin patch. It will hold for years as long as the rust has stopped, but, metal patching is what you should do.
I assume that you're familiar with POR-15. The silver stuff is the thickest, but, for those areas that are hard to get at, would you be able to pour anything in there? If so, you should try to neutralize it with a zinc-based reformer (Rustoleum has one, there are others - try an auto paint shop). Some of these products have the consistency of water, some of milk, but, you can pour them or saturated a sponge and jam it into a corner to keep the area moist for awhile.....then use POR. I know you don't need to do this if your covering the area with POR, but, for those areas you can't see, the poured liquid can seap into areas where rust may exist, but, not yet be detected by you.
