I was told by realiable sources that the Saab unit was no longer available, but that was old data. I guess it was not available for awhile but is again from Saab.
I installed one in my '90 S model and spent 6 months in Alaska. When it's 20 below and the car is outside, the block heater is wonderful. Leave the heater valve open (select high temp on the heater control) and the inside of the car will be somewhat warm from the water circulating through the heater core all night. Also, the car heater warms up the car within about 3 minutes of starting the car.
I switched to Mobil 1 5W30 in the engine and transmission while I was in Alaska, althought I would not do the same in the trans. after reading some posts. I'm a Southern Calif native, and my experience in Alaska was fine with the car. If I'm headed for cold weather, I'm gonna take a Saab with a block heater.
