loose bolt in tranny

I was changing the Honda MTF in my 85 900Turbo this morning (I had changed over to MTF about 5000 km ago). There were no problems with shifting, but I thought it would be good to put some fresh stuff in. When I pulled the plug to drain the fluid, there was a 1" bolt stuck to the magnetic plug! (along with a fair bit of metal “goop”) I have to assume that this isn't a good thing! The threads on the end of the bolt are chewed up, which may account for the metal shavings on the plug.
I haven't had any work done to the tranny since I've had the car (12,000 kms), and it's shifts well, doesn't pop out of gear or slip. Am I on the road to impending disaster? Or do I just keep driving until it fails?
