91 900 LPT heating problem

Bought a lovely '91 900 LPT over a year ago with 90K miles and haven't given it the care it requires. It keeps going and I will slow down and begin to address the numerous things that need to be done because it is a lovely example.
One problem that I could do with some serious help with, seems to be a heating related problem (even though the temperature guague shows normal). It doesn't happen as often now that we are in the middle of winter here in Ireland.
During the summer, it was prone to happen when i got stuck in traffic and the needle did rise above normal (75% of scale).
What happens is
1) Runs OK when cold, needs service.
2) When it gets hot, the revs go up to 1500K.
3) I can come to a halt and the revs still stay up.
4) Sometimes when I turn it off, it will be hard to start but revs are back to normal for a while. They then take with a mind of their own.
5) Dropped it into the local saab dealer and he said that they 'guessed' it might be the air. mass meter but that since one will cost €400 euro plus same again for analysis, that I needed to concider investing in it.
6)The check engine light stayed on during the summer, became intermittant before christmas and now only goes on when the engine get hot.
Needs some serious thought.
Best regards,
