I had the same problem. First I corrects all air leaks.

Then my mechanic told me to check my idle control valve and clean it out with brake cleaner. That wasn't it but was the cause of a similar problem on my brother-in-law's car.

On my car it was the manifold engine temperature guage that had gone bad. It is located on the intake manifold between intake ports 2 and 3. It has blue plastic on it and screws into the manifold. It is covered by an electrical clip that looks like a fuel injector electrical clip.

The used piece should not cost you more that 3 pounds at a car wrecker. Try NEOBROTHERS.com in Great Britain. They are part of a network of 3 junkyards, so someone will have the parts you require.

P.S. - I bought an AMM that was rebuilt in the USA for 100 dollars. (I bought it for other reasons after this problem). I thing 400 you speak of is for brand new Bosch in the box. I don't think you need to get a new unit. Just use rebuilt.
