If you have trouble finding a smooth road and can't avoid traffic and road noise, find an empty parking lot that is very smooth. If you coast in neutral and turn back and forth, you can usually detect a bad wheel bearing even before it makes enough noise to hear it on the road. By coasting slowly, you also can eliminate most transmission noise(bad pinion, diff gear whine/growl, etc.).
From the driver's seat, wheel bearing noise can fool you, too. The noise can sound like it's coming from the right side of the car, when it's really the left. Bad bearings can also make noise either when loaded(outside wheel) or unloaded(inside wheel). I have found that while a really bad bearing will normally make noise when loaded, bearings in the early stages of failure sometimes make noise when unloaded.
If road testing is not conclusive, I have found that if you jack up and remove both front wheels and run the car idling in 3rd gear, you can hear the rumble of a bad bearing with a stethoscope(big screwdriver) touched to the steering spindle/knuckle. Be very careful not to get whacked by moving parts, because the rotors are spinning.
