I just now did an eyeball overview of how possible the fiberglass duct would be. Totally do-able! The idea would be to utilize the space already there within the hood construction. The hitch would be to block off the various "escape" routes that surround the vent and the hood support bracketing. Look under your hood and you'll see what I mean. To seal that off I'd use a combination of f-glass and silicone, building a narrow ceiling through channel duct that would end just in front of the stock 16V snorkel that hangs over the lip of the engine side wall. To effectively seal off the one side of the duct will necessitate cutting through (rotary blade) a piece of the underside hood metal support, sealing off one side of the exposed section, then replacing the metal piece and sealing it with glass. One could also weld it back in place. All very simple stuff, really. The trick with fiberglass to have as much of a support system in place as possible before laying resin soaked glass cloth. Similar to paper mache artwork. So for that I'd have a thin guage metal duct fashioned first, then glass that in place.

Because I don't think it's necessary to have a tight seal from the fabricated duct to the intake snorkle, any rain that would get drawn into the scoop would drain down through the gap just before the snorkle opening.

You've got me thinking about the scoop design as well. Instead of buying a prefabricated one, I could just as easily make one from glass! Something very functional, yet streamlined and aesthetically appealing. And I could design it so that it sits flush on top of the hood without having to mess with or redo the paint job. Paint it a flat black like the rest of the trim on my car and off I go! Thanks for the inspiration.
