When my fuel pump went ('89 non-turbo), I played with the old one after installing the new. There's many poles on the motor, & one went bad on my pump. So if it happened to stop on that pole it wouldn't start. I'd reach into the nozzle & turn the rotor a little bit, then it would start & run. I could run it again & again, until it happened to stop on the dead pole. That's WHY the mallet trick works. You're just bumping the pump away from the dead spot. Then every time you turn off the car it's just dumb luck whether it stops at the dead spot.
