This used to happen to old Fords. They had mechanical linkage to the auto trans, and as the bushings wore out , the linkage detents didn't always match with the detents in the trans. The Saab also has detents inthe trans & the stick itself, however they are connected by cable and are rarely out of sync unless the cable or trans was removed, and not properly set upon reinstallation.
In any case, the emergency brake should hold either way. E-brake is designed to stop a moving car if the main brakes fail.
