If someone is in your blind spot, it's obvious that they are too close! I usually don't worry about people directly behind me, it's their responsibility to keep from hitting me. If they are so dam close that I can see them in either one of the side view mirrors, it's their own fault if they hit me!
If you suspect someone is "hovering" off the rear fender of your car...Virginia drivers love to ride just off the rear quarters of other vehicles and sit there for miles..... just adjust your speed. I personally like to wind up the turbo for a short moment. That will catch most of them off guard and they won't accellerate quite is quickly...then you can make your maneuver, lane-change etc. Now, if I'm driving my work van (with dismal amounts of reserve power), or if I'm in slow moving traffic with no room, ususally backking off the throttle is enough to make the other vehicle move on past me.
The trick is just to keep track of drivers as they approach ya. If you see a Ford (or whatever vehicle) coming up in the left (or right)side of you, it never passes you, and you don't see it anymore...chances are, it's hovering right beside you!
