Disconnecting the negative cable could have fried one or more diodes in the alternator(there are many). You should never disconnect the cable while running.
You might try a new regulator as others have suggested, but I suspect that you will still have the problem of the alternator light remaining on until you blip the throttle. Check voltage when running with all cables clean and connected and good alternator ground wire. If over 13.5 volts, you might be able to live with it for quite awhile. Eventually a new alternator is in order, if the light stays on until pedal blipping. Save regulator for a spare when you put in the new alternator.
