I think it is wear in the friction discs that make up a clutch pack, to the point where the total height of the pack isn't great enough to lock up when called to. When it's colder, everything shrinks, including the stack of discs, and thus it is shorter and won't lock until things warm up.
A fix I have heard of and want someone with a near-dead auto tranny to try is, add a little brake fluid to the tranny. It swells the linings and I hear does it enough to extend the life of a dead transmission. An experiment someone needs to be a guinea pig for.
