My headgasket failed in my 4th year of grad school (mid march) - in my case failure was obvious - the freshly changed oil looked like nestle' quik after a 10 mile drive. I had a local machine shop replace all the valve stem seals as well as testing, resurfacing, and maybe porting (check the archives under my name). Their bill was under $400. Figure another $100 for various seals (have you changed the water pump?) + $100 for a good torque wrench.
Still much cheaper than having a mechanic do the work (I never called, but at $90/hour + machine shop work it wouldn't be cheap).
The job took me about two afternoons, one to pull the head, another to put the head back on. Definitely easier than a transmission swap. Note that it is useful to have a friend around when you lift the head off the car - it isn't light!
Before finishing the job, be sure to check the timing chain tensioner. Its extension is the sole metric SAAB uses to recommend replacement.
