CV Joint Diagnosis Posted by Paul [Email] (#792) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Paul) on Mon, 3 Oct 2005 18:30:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Hi:
Son is doing a lot of work on his car, posted earlier regaring possible whole axle replacemet. Has decided he'd rather try to save some $$$ if possible. The four boots were basically sound, save a small split, crack or hole, perhaps 1/4" in each. Seems this can only get worse, so figured now on replacing at least the boots.
Pulled the Axles tonight, and am seeking guidance on an out-of-car test to determine the state of the CV Joint and Tripod bearing.
The Tripod bearing contact points inside the Inner Driver seem smooth. Perhaps a visible point of contact, but can't spot or feel any grooving yet. When bad, how apparent is this wear?
The one "test" I did on the CV Joint was to secure the axle, then with the CVJ oriented a a direct extension of the axle I pulled out firmly and rotated the spline up to 12:00, then accross to 6:00, seemed smooth about halfway bach through to being aligned with the axle, but then slightly caughte until past center and the smoothe to 6:00. Similar results going 3:00 to 9:00. Same test and results pushing in on the splined section. I've no idea if any of this is significant.
Noticed heat "blueing" spots, perhaps 3/8" diameter on the outside of the CV Housing directly opposing each Ball Bearing.
Also, any inspection or test for the Tripod Bearing?
Thanks
