Ecode is not illegal in U.S.; it was not lawful to import cars without DOT spec headlights, but retrofitting by owner is legal, as least as far as my websearching taught me.

As for appearance, imagine the 1987/8 and later models with the large solid glass lens that fills the entire space where earlier models had the grey plastic bezel trim with/without a clear parking light adjacent to grill. The Ecode looks very similar (to the newer headlight) except it's face is vertical, whereas the DOT headlights have a slanted face. Now, the car was designed for the Ecodes and in the opinion of some, the blunt Ecode nose instead of the chiseled DOT nose looks nicer.

The light pattern is distinct. A DOT reflector sends light out roughly in a cone shape, evenly distributed. The Ecode focuses light in a more useable pattern, ahead and to side of road but not into the sky. One drawback is that the upper edge of the pattern is very intense and so you have to take care to aim them properly, or else oncoming cars will "flash" you mercilessly as they think you have the brights on when you don't. Fortunately, you can aim Ecodes yourself pretty easily. The bulb is just an H4 or 9033 bulb, no big deal. In my opinion (don't have figures for you), Ecodes beat the living snot out of the old DOT sealed beam units (like my '85 came with), and are even significantly better than the new style like my old '90. That's with 65/50W. With 100/90W, it's like an alien abduction.

Search on Daniel Stern lighting for helpful how-to wiring info.
