I've never understood why, but US DOT spec seems to forbid the sharp cutoffs in beam patterns that 'E-codes' have, and for a lot of years I believe they needed to be 'sealed beam' to be DOT. The biggest funtional difference is in the low beam 'pattern'. E's have a very distinct flat top to the light beam with a flare up on the RHand side. Due to this accurate aiming is necessary. Your application seems it would benefit greatly from E-code lights. I find that the '87-later c900 OE lights put way to much light 'up', making it harder to see. The only difference in appearance on your car will be the 'look' of the pattern in the lense. physically I think the E's are a bit bigger on the backside, but the car was designed for them so the fit is no problem. The E-codes use an 'H4' type replaceable bulb. You have many options for 'power', from 55/60 [ hi/low ] - maybe low/hi ?, to as much as 100/120. You will need to change the wiring female 'plug' at the headlights, and if you want higher power bulbs it is recommended to go to a relay power wiring to keep the high current out of the switching relays. Canadian c900's came with the E-codes and used are available from Canadian wrecking yards. New are also available, no longer made by Hella, but appear to be exact 'copies'. The rubber wire boots and small metal mounting angles for the lower outside mount are still available from Saab.
