If it's the same as my son's '85, it takes a 1/2" drive socket wrench directly into the plug's square hole. If it's like my '90, it takes a 12mm hex key (Allen wrench). I bought a 12mm hex bit socket to use on my 1/2" socket wrench. For both cars, I had to use a 2' long cheater bar on the wrench handle to get the plugs to break free. (I used an old bicycle fork!) About 30 to 35 ft-lbs of torque should be good for reinstalling the plug.
Some years didn't have a plug, but I don't know which years those are. For those cars, you've got to undo the rear plate to drain the oil. The advantage there is that you're able to clean out ALL the debris that way.
