Lean running condition can burn a valve and so can a too tightly adjusted valve do if it isn't allowed to close completly.
What happens is that when a valve doesn't close completly, a small amount of air/fuel/flames mixture is allowed to escape between the seat and valve during the combustion stroke. That will act as an Acetylen/oxygen cutting torch and will burn up the valve in short order.
