Todd,
Sounds like you may have a bearing or two going South. There's a number of ways to deal with this situation but as a guy who rebuilds these units I hate to hear of people driving them until they blow. The difference in the value of the parts to rebuild a blown-up unit versus a merely noisy one can be hundreds of dollars. It's a fair amount of labor to swap out one of these transaxles so I figure that you really need to put a reliable one in there. If you pull the unit from your car as it is now and get it properly rebuilt then you won't have to pay for a second swap (for about 150,000 miles). In the condition that it sounds like it's in right now it won't (most likely) need a lot of hard parts. Once it blows it may need too many hard parts to make it worth rebuilding and then you have to find a good reliable salvage unit (roll the dice) or buy a rebuilt unit with a possibly worthless core for trade in. That's just how I see it, anyway good luck whatever you do.
