Although it depends on what all he is planning to replace, the price does seem high.

I've done this job myself and it is not difficult. If you feel comfortable with mechanical work and you can find a good used inner driver (preferably from the passenger side ~ $15 at the wreckers), then just buy a new oil seal ($10), some high temperature grease and install the whole thing in an afternoon.

If you take it to a mechanic he may end up replacing both the inner driver and the entire driveshaft assebmly just to make sure everything is covered (and you won't be back in his shop). Most often the drivshaft is just fine but i'm giving him the benefit of the doubt. If this is the case, the prices might run something like:

$130 for new inner driver
$10 for new oil seal (at inner driver)
$100 rebuilt axle assembly (if he is being cautious or your tripod bearing is actually damaged)
$15 for misc supplies including grease for the inner and outer joints

$280 for ~ 3.5 hours of labour $80/hour

Total ~ $535

These costs are based on ordering parts from one of the online suppliers (good prices but perhaps a bit higher than to-the-trade prices)and the approximate time it took me to do this kind of job for the first time, by myself, lying on my back in my parking garage(ie. i'm not a pro).

Out of curiosity, why does your mechanic say you need to replace your inner driver? Are you experiencing any vibration on acceleration? If you are, then it's time to replace it. If not, just refresh the grease in the joint and keep on driving until it does (possibly not for quite a long time).
