The light that lights up the ignition switch frequently fails. It is accessed by removing the floor console (two screws in front under the shift boot, two screws in rear under the ashtray). The light actually plugs into a little socket cast into the bottom of the console. Sometimes if someone has removed the console it may not be put back into the socket. The bulb may be good but it's burried under the carpet. That will solve the ignition switch lighting issue. If you want to add additional lighting I'd wire it to that light connection. It will be closer to the dash and easier theto access.
SaabDude is also correct about the light under the rear-view mirror. Check the wiring and bulbs on that too before investing in any additional lighting.
A poor-mans short-term alternative is to get one of those little lights on a goose neck that plug into the cigarette lighter. They are great when you are trying to find change at a toll booth. :-)
