For your '93, you'll want to take the rear cover off and drain it. That will give you an opportunity to clean out the filter on the rear cover. I believe that SAAB did away with the drain in '90 or '91 - probably '91.

Opinions and experiences vary for the oil. Officially, SAAB said that thou shalt not drain the transmission oil - it's OK to leave it for the life of the transmission. Yeah, but what if it shortens the life of the transmission? 150k is beyond the warranty, SAAB doesn't care. OK? Saaright!

A few years ago, Anders said (IIRC) that his take is that the transmisson oil should be changed to get the pieces of gear resulting from grinding reverse drained from the transmission. If they're not drained from the transmission, they (and this is a paraphrase of what he said) the chunks of reverse gear tend to get recirculated and chew up the pinion bearing and the other bearings. If you drain them out, the bearings last longer.

Several guys have had good results with changing the transmission oil (using a good grade of 10W30) every other engine oil change. You'll want to avoid synthetic motor oils because they're too slick for the synchros to operate well - you'll get grinding.

Others have had bad luck with the combination of high-boost engines and regular oil, and have gone through a few trannies. Using Redline kept their new trannies going.

Whatever oil you use, you'll want to re-change the oil after a week or so to get particulates that didn't drain out with the first change.

If you have gear oil in your transmission (strong sulfury smell), you'll want to use gear oil because the detergents in motor oil will bring all sorts of crud into suspension and hasten fatal wear.
