I agree with RS -- I have a 93 and changed the gasket on the diff cover, after the oil was drained -- no plug -- just remove the cover. Inside the diff cover is a filter screen that could have picked up debris -- you might ask your shop if you don't do it yourself to save or review the leftovers. Could be handy to know what they found. There will probably be a silvery paste tucked in that corner, which is normal. Just make sure it is all cleaned out of the diff cover before you put it back. I used a good quality 10W30 and the gearbox is very smooth even with 178K on it.
