The fuel distributer doesn't care which lines go where, but the injectors only open at a given pressure. The original lines are hard plastic. They don't give when the fuel distributer pressurizes them. If you made up new lines and used rubber fuel line, or something similar, the rubber expands when the fuel distributer pressurizes the lines, and the fuel injectors don't see enough pressure to open. In turn the car doesn't run.
The bottom line is the system won't work without the proper hard plastic fuel lines.
