If you have a bad ground connection your saab'll never start (starter assumes over 150 amps even when the engine is hot; and more than 500 if it's subzero (in Celsius, too lazy to conver to Fahrenheit, sorry :)). I suppose you forgotten to plug your alternator to the system :) And you drove your batt out for these days.
And did you check ground connection for your alt? Mine has a separate wiring which is easy to miss while assembling.

Btw the gauge did you use? I suppose 1 awg is near the minimum for such a length and amperage.
