Battery Light and Running Rough

Hey Everyone - Thanks in advance for your help.
I inherited my Dad's 1980 Black 900T 3-door in Oct 06 with 79K original miles. The car is mint but has a few quirks - no problem, just part of the charm of a 27 yr old car. Latest incident started to creep in over the past week or so. The battery light and the cube immediately to the left started to glow faintly. They'd fade in and out - go out for a few minutes and then return. The other night they illuminated full bright. Got home and checked the alternator belt (new last Oct) and it appeared fine. The lights extinguished the next morning after I started the car. Drove 40 miles to work this am (I live S of Wash, DC) without any problems. Started the car tonight and made it approx 5 miles down the interstate when I noticed the car getting sluggish. Almost feels like it's missing. Back in the garage she idles very rough. Initially I had thought that the battery light and the lit "empty cube" to the left were due to some stray electrons associated with the work around that the Indy did last Oct for my inop inst gauge flood light rheostat. Now I think it may be related to the rough running. Any recommendations? I'll check the battery terminals in the am.
Also, what manual would you recommend? Chilton, Haynes or other? Bentley starts at 1981.
Thanks,
Mark
