I have an 86 900 with an 8 valve engine. Id have to say that the most benefit in the 8valve cars it to find ways to reduce the weight of the car. Go to your local roller mills and get a slip. Gut anything you dont need. You can lose alot of weight in your car just making sure the soft stuff in the interior stays dry. My car is just a toy so practicality is not so much the issue. So my back seat is gone. as well as a spare tire and jack. You can drop alot of weight if you dont mind sacrificing some insulation. Remove the padding under the carpet, scrape the tar with a heat gun, and put your carpet back down. I have super light corbeau seats in it. I do have a stereo system (it is still a street car). I had mine weighed last time it was 2,400 lbs. Ive made a few changes to it since then so I should get it done again.
I have an 87 900s bottom end with a .075 shaved 8v head, MSS race header No cat and a cherry bomb (flowmaster 3 chamber copy from Meineke. It has a 85 16v turbo tailpipe. I swiss cheesed the stock airbox and opened up the grille area. I have a blue coil and Magnecor wires. The engine is otherwise stock. I plan to replace the 87s motor in favor of a 2.1 liter bottom end, cam it and do the head work. Im looking into swapping in a fuel distributor out of a volvo. Reduction of drag on that motor is good too. Nix the AC, and swap in a manual steering setup. It has a turbo oil cooler setup on it.
Thought about putting a 4 bbl carb on it like Kevins race car (Thunder Cow). I was looking for a weber sidedraft set up for it but the price is high. And by the way I can attest to the compression/timing issues, because I have to run premium only with the timing way advanced. No biggie tho as the current motor was frankensteined together from 3 parts cars over the weekend. But the car is rather fast for an 8valve. And its a ton of fun to drive.
It has a boat load of suspension work too. Front upper and lower control arms plated 16g steel. Poly upper and lower arm bushings. KYB shocks with poly upper and lower bushings. Im gonna plate the rear lower control arms and do poly bushings. It has turbo sway bars with polys. Jamex springs. I have the S&R skidplate. The springs need trimmed since it sits too high in the rear. Im putting in a manual rack. Once the front end is complete it gets the "Turbo" alignment. I have Panasport 15x6.5 alloys on it. The brake rotors are stock variety with as EBC pads out front and some Ferroceramic pads in the back. I might upgrade to braided lines to stiffen pedal feel. Im adding a girling master cyl behind the center console for a fly off handbrake using the stock handle. Im exploring the idea of replumbing the brakes so I can do one of the 7 position bias adjusters.
Body has some paint and graphic stuff. I have 2 hoods for it. One has a pair of hood vents on the forward edge from a mid 80s Pontiac Sunbird Turbo. The other hood has a 4 inch cowl induction scoop glassed into it.
I have Jc whitney roof scoop that I have to cut out to finish. It has a S&R rear Ducktail from a 99 hatch. I have the vent covers on the sides. I did a mesh (chicken wire) grille treatment. I upgraded to a 16v Turbo front air dam. I blacked out all the chrome (like a turbo) The rubber side trim is gone and a vinyl stripe covers the holes. I was going for an older look. The body is Factory Dolomite Sand. But I sprayed it with a 2 tone scheme inspired by the 900 Enduro. Im about to change the colors on the car from tan, forest green, and gray. Im not sure what the new color plan is until its done.
The interior was a rare brown when I got it, but it was abused. The door panels are out of an 87 and I repainted green to coordinate with the tan/green theme. The carpet was dyed black black, and is about to get redyed again. The door panels, rear side panels and knee bolsters are being redone in satin black. The whole interior will be blacked out. Except for the custom dash insert and door inserts that Im making from sheets of hammered aluminum. Those will be a charcoal gray. I have a 99 Ems wheel that I restored with a yellow ( this end up) band on it. The shifter is shortened physically and mechanically. And it retains the reverse lockout and it doesnt spin. I am screen printing a custom shift pattern insert that says H O L D O N in the 6 positions in the pattern.
I have a temp guage, oil pressure and volt guages in the dash. No sunroof and no Power nothin. The heat still works but some of the vents are blocked off.
I have a Safety Devices 6 point cage with door bars and lateral bar for the harness mounts. Im just getting the cage finished so I havent gotten the harnesses in yet. Im going to have to pad the cage a bit as I have hit my head on it getting in and out. It needs the door sill plates cut to fit the cage bars.
Dont forget about those 8v cars. They can be fun to play with too. I had as much fun at Putnam Park as the Turbo boys did. Its a blast to wind out second gear and let off the gas so the thing backfires thru the exhaust. I set off the same car alarm on my way to work everytime I drive it.
