If it were me, I'd consider getting another 900 with the 16VT engine in it. There are alot of Autobox cars out there forsale cheap as the auto is going out. SAAB stopped carrying refurbished units that the dealers can order to repair customer cars. I got a 1991 900S four door with leather in outstanding condition for, I can't tell you but it was less than $500. I've seen Convertibles that are auto turbo's listed with an asking price of $1,000. All you have to do it take all of the good stuff from your car and move it to the new car, and pull both engine/transmissions and convert the auto to your 5 speed. You could consider having your 5 speed worked on at the same time.
I know it's not what you were asking but it's almost (but not quite!) as bad as the question "should I upgrade my 3 year old PC or just get a new one"...
I took the auto out of a parts car and now my son has a newer saab! And think of all of the spare parts you might have! there is a great write up on doing the conversion. As soon as my brother gives my 1987 8v 3 door 5 speed back to me the 1991 above goes to a 5 speed.
