The CEL is the engine control's way of telling you something is wrong. Sometimes a fault is latched - if it sees it, it stays lit until something tells it to turn off. Others aren't latched - they are only on when the problem is occuring.
It may be as simple as a sensor that is right on the edge of the threshold the ECU determines is 'failed.' When cold, it shows up and the CEL comes on; after a few seconds, the sensors goes back into range, and if it's not a latched type fault, the CEL goes out. And the ECU is pretty good at accomodating faults, so you don't notice it.
It's unlikely serious because the fault isn't latched. It may get worse with time - things like this don't heal. You could read out the codes if you want - they should be stored (see the FAQs).
