Drove them on an angle with a pretty fat screwdriver and a hammer, set on one ear of the 3. Then once loosened just a bit they spun right off, kind of dialed off with a screwdriver down in one of the 3 open spaces, held vertical.
But you really need the socket made, to TIGHTEN them once they're out, because hammering them tight they never quite make it enough, and the shifter keeps loosening and sliding around.
My approach was not to grind a socket but to replace the winged nuts with standard hex nuts when I put it back together. It's actually believe it or not not metric, but SAE standard (US) threads, 1/4-20. Then use a socket that will fit in the hole to tighten them. Maybe have to rummage, an 11mm fits as well as 7/16", I think you'll definitely need a 1/4" drive socket as the 3/8" drive ones are too beefy to go down in the wells.
