And vise grips to hold onto it with.
If he's worth his salt he'll have a grinder. Also a cutoff wheel on an air angle grinder, and a vise to hold the socket, probably the easiest way to do this.
And if he's an okay shit, he'll let you do this, or do it for you, or charge you a little something to do it for you.
Doughnuts or beer might help make him more agreeable.
Take the one of the three 3-wing nuts that you did get off, with you to test your tool on, so it fits.
And make sure the socket you take to cut down actually will go down into the recesses on the shifter housing, not too big around, before you grind it up.
The size if that was a standard hex nut is 7/16" or 11mm (the identical size). Some say they've ground down a 12 mm socket to work on the wing nut.
