It's quite unusual to have one of these with the combustion chamber caked with carbon. It suggests that there may have been some serious pre-ignition occurring. I'm gonna guess that you won't find a problem with the head, that is, not one which would cause knocking. Did you happen to notice whether the knocking was related to whether the clutch was engaged or disengaged? That would tell you it was a bad thrust bearing. You should set up a dial indicator and measure the crankshaft end play. Good luck.
