personal i would investigate further into the problem so i knew exactly what was going wrong may it be that the contact points on the gold or the bulb holder is chard and in need of cleaning, or if the holder was faulty and needing replacement. but on taping power off another object to power the light personally i would run it off one of the three bulbs by the a.c. switches.
use a test light find the power wire off of one when the ignition is on, run one wire over to the bulb, connect to either side, don't really matter which (if you notice the bulb holder metal points on the outside of the holder, attach hot on one of the posts, put the holder back in its spot and see if it lights using its own ground.
if not run the ground off the other post, if problems arise retrofit the holder.
make sure to have a few fusees on hand steeping into new ground always blows a few.
but as to where you tap into power let use know how it goes
have you considered on a new/used bulb holder replacement
