I've driven a Saab 900 for about 15 years winter and summer and this latest one for almost 7 years. Without a doubt its a great winter car - maybe the best I've ever had - but there are three things that the SAAB engineers could have thought through just a little better for snowy climates. First -the rear (and front) bumper on the 86 model and earlier acts as a ledge where snow and ice can build up and block the lights. Not a big deal but for a company that places so much emphasis on safety - you'd think this might have been thought through a little better. A slanted bumper might have helped.
Second snow build up on the two side mirrors and in and around the side windows - again not a big deal but it does mean having to constantly roll down the window to clean the window and mirror - a slightly larger mirror hood might have done the trick.
Third and this is the only one that really irks me - the intake vent being horizontal is a perfect container for all the snow and ice that accumulates on the hood and when you get 10cm of snow like we did last night that is a lot. What happens when the blower is turned on and the engine is not warm the moisture accumulates in the cabin and freezes to all the glass. Leaving the blower off doesn't help. It takes quite a while to bring the cabin back to normal as the engine warms up and the humidity reduced.
You may laugh but where I live there is almost constant snow for a three - four month period and these little issues can be aggravating and compromise safety (driving down the road scraping ice off the inside of windshield is not good - waiting 20 minutes every morning just to warm up the interior - especially when you daughter slept in and has to get to school ten minutes ago - is also not an option).
So is there a solution to the horizontal intake issue - eg a plastic
scoop or intake? Other thoughts or suggestions?
