hood latch cable adjustment?

s there any good way to adjust the hood latch cable? The lever inside the car goes pretty far back before popping the latch. Any advice or insight would be appreciated. I had a lot of trouble opening the hood today so that I could replace the headlamps. It took two of us pulling on it to get it to pop..
