Don't overtorque the alternator bracket bolts that hold it to the block. Ask me how I know....
Getting the alternator loose should not be that difficult, just remember to remove the two mounting bolts that you can reach and pivot the bracket on the third one. After you pivot the whole assembly (alternator, bushings and bracket) you have enough clearance to slide the pivot bolt out.
I've heard and experienced nothing but bad news about non-Bosch regulators and alternator rebuilds. I agree with your choice of maintaining the existing unit instead of getting an iffy replacement. I'll get over 160k out of a brush/regulator unit. The knock-off rebuild in my '92 ate the (insert modifier here) brushes in six thousand miles. Pure dren. Is there an internets acronym for 'Avoid At All Costs?'
Also, while the opportunity presents itself, reterminate the alternator field wire (green and white single spade connector) if it shows any signs of weakness or corrosion. Also clean the other connections (both grounds and positive cable connector and connecting surfaces on the alternator) while you are at it. It beats having your alternator warning light turn on coming down the Thruway hill from Rome into Utica and driving the rest of the way (an hour and a half) biting your nails hoping the battery lasts longer than your drive home before figuring out the problem. While I was cleaning every positive contact on the planet, I cleaned and insulated the plus-fifteen terminal on the passenger's fender too. Yep, it was corroded.
