Like I said, been there, done that. I understand what you're saying. I used to get 1/3 to 1/2 into the red when accelerating when the car was an AT. Now, I just barely hit the red in 3rd gear (have to work on that!), but for the most part, that is because I am more than ready to shift into 4th.
The reason you are in the red in the AT, is, in part, because the engine is loading up, and that is , at least in part, a function of the gear ratio.
I really don't think I am imagining this -- the 5 speed flies! BTW, I have been known to drive my Saab like a lunatic before I put in the 5-speed, as well!
For what it is worth, enjoy the AT. I can't say that I'd recommend it to anyone that was not physically disabled, though -- you may have had good luck, but that's not what the majority of posters report. I don't think it is their imagination either.
